Trump Says Talks with Iran 'Working Out Very Well'
Speaking from the Oval Office, Trump offered a confident but pointed characterization of the ongoing exchange: "We have very good conversations going on. It's working out very well. They got a little cute, as they have been doing for 47 years. Nobody ever took them on. We took them on."
He went further, painting a picture of a fundamentally weakened Iran: "They have no navy, they have no air force, they have no leaders. They have no nothing. Actually … it is regime change. You call that enforced regime change, but we're talking to them."
Trump struck a firm tone on Washington's negotiating posture, stating: "We're talking to them … we're taking a tough stand," before teasing an imminent development — "We'll have some information by the end of the day" — regarding the status of the Iran discussions.
The president departed without fielding questions on the conflict, the ongoing negotiations, or the volatile situation along the Strait of Hormuz.
The remarks come against a backdrop of sustained hostilities that ignited on Feb. 28, when US and Israeli forces launched strikes on Iran. Tehran responded with successive drone and missile attacks directed at Israel and Gulf nations hosting American military installations. The fighting was paused on April 8 under a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan. Washington and Tehran held talks in Pakistan last weekend, with efforts to schedule a follow-up session in Islamabad currently in progress.
In a separate action, Trump signed an executive order aimed at fast-tracking the therapeutic use of psychedelic substances. He said the order "directs the FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) to expedite their review of certain psychedelics already designated as breakthrough therapy drugs."
The directive, he explained, will "clear away unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles, improve data sharing among the FDA and the Department of Veterans Affairs, and facilitate fast rescheduling of any psychedelic drugs that become FDA approved."
