North Carolina Adapted Sports Receives $25,000 Grant from The Hartford

Company surprises local athlete with custom-fit adaptive sports equipment
The grant enabled NCAS, an organization within the Move United member network, to purchase adaptive sports equipment, including three e-assist recumbent trikes to be used for the organization’s Adapted Cycling Program.
The Hartford also surprised Olivia Queen, a 12-year-old athlete who participates in adapted cycling and youth wheelchair basketball with a custom-fit recumbent trike. Queen will use this trike to participate in NCAS off-road cycling programs, which include trail rides and local cycling races.
“She (Olivia) has grown to love cycling over the last year and with this new cycle she will be able to do so much more! The growth and confidence that she has developed over the last three years with being involved in NCAS is truly amazing to watch and makes this mom’s heart smile so big! NCAS has given her so many opportunities she otherwise might not have gotten!” said Heather Queen, Olivia’s mother.
“To say this Hase Trix is an upgrade from Olivia’s previous recumbent trike is an understatement,” said NCAS CEO Wes Hall. “Olivia has excelled as a multisport athlete in NC Adapted Sports Programming. I am looking forward to seeing her growth in trail riding with this new cycle. Big thanks to The Hartford and Move United for making this happen. In addition, the $25k grant has permitted NCAS to upgrade its recumbent trike fleet to better serve the Triangle Area Community.”
NCAS is striving to change the landscape of adapted sports in the Triangle Area by providing adapted sports opportunities for people living with a physical disability. NCAS offers adapted kayaking, cycling, climbing, boccia, and youth wheelchair basketball. NCAS is hosting its annual Adapted Sports Day at the Poole YMCA & Lake Benson Park on April 18.
